If you would like to see actual Google AdWords PPC ads just do a Google search on any keyword or phrase. Once you get to the page of search results you will see the PPC ads on the right hand side. These PPC ads were created by other webmasters just like you. Each time someone clicks one of these ads the owner of the ad has to pay a fee to Google. The fee is determined by a bidding system in which advertisers compete to obtain the highest position in the listings. The more popular, and therefore more valuable, a keyword is the higher the successful bid amount will be on that particular word.
The position of each ad is determined by Google using three factors:
1. Keyword/Phrase
2. Bid Price
3. Quality Score
Most people don’t go beyond the first two pages of search results, so your goal will be to have your ad show up within the Sponsored Links of those first two pages. This means that you will need to be within the top 20 positions for your target keywords for the best results.
To achieve this positioning you will need to concentrate on choosing the best keywords or phrases, bidding within the appropriate price ranges and maintaining a good quality score.
Let’s take a closer look at these factors.
Keywords and/or phrases
These are the words that people actually type into the search box when doing a search. Choose keywords that are both relevant to your product or service and commonly used by people looking for that product or service. For example, if you create a Google AdWords campaign to market a course on how to play the guitar here is a good keyword list:
“Learn to play guitar”
“Playing guitar”
“Guitar lesson”
“How play guitar”
“learn guitar”
Bidding within the active range
All keywords have an active bid range. This is the range of bid prices required to get you in the top 20 positions. Work within your budget, but try to get in the top 10 results
High quality score:
The quality score is based upon the click through rate (CTR) of your keyword. Make certain that the keywords you choose are highly relevant to your ad and that your ad is written to lead a reader to click.
So now that you know the basics of how Google AdWords works you are ready to begin. The best way to learn is by doing so start your AdWords account and create a few test campaigns.
